The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is county’s main law enforcement entity. Two prisons operated by the Arkansas Department of Corrections are located in Newport off of Arkansas Highway 384: the Grimes Unit and the McPherson Unit. The Grimes Unit is a maximum-security state prison for men, while the McPherson Unit is a prison for women and includes the state’s “death row” for female criminals.
